Treacherous Waters is a case featured in Criminal Case as the one-hundred and thirty-fifth case of the game. It is the twentieth case of the game's World Edition (Season 3) and also the second case to take place in South Asia.

Plot

Mumbai needed help from The Bureau because a devastating tsunami hit the city. Jack Archer and the player were assigned to go to a recently flooded museum to save any people stranded them. There, they found a constable named Deepak Kumar shot in the chest.

Elliot Clayton found out Deepak was investigating Om Padmasana, the suspicious guru the Bureau learned of in New Delhi. The guru was found and was added to the suspects list.

After gathering enough evidence, Jack and the player managed to incriminate Amrita Kumar, the victim's sister, as the killer. Amrita initially denied killing her brother, whom she loved, but admitted the crime soon after. Amrita was alone in the museum and felt someone approaching her from behind. Thinking the person was a raider, she turned around and fired her gun without identifying the person (per her brother's advice on self-defense). She discovered that she had taken Deepak's life.

At the trial, Judge Nigel Adaku understood that the murder was an accident, but also stated Amrita tried to divert police attention. The judge issued a 7 years' jail sentence for Amrita.

After the trial, Jack and the player—accompanied by Lars Douglas—were going to eat some curry, when Ingrid Bjorn arrived in the office with some tasks for the two detectives: Chief Medhekar of the Mumbai Police Department needed their help, while a tuk-tuk driver named Sandeep Sadhra wanted to recover his driving license (which Kumar had revoked after seeing Sandeep speeding).

Jack and the player went to the waterfront walk to help Sandeep and found a torn paper. They placed it back together and found out it was Sandeep's license. They proceeded to return the license to a thankful Sandeep, who then parted for a trip around the country.

After that, Jonah Karam joined the player in assisting Chief Medhekar, who said that Deepak was on trail of a mysterious criminal but died before being able to show the evidence. Jonah and the player found a box containing Deepak's evidence in the flooded street. They found out that the criminal Deepak was after was Guru Om Padmasana and that he was none other than Ezra Hope, a hippie the player met while working in Rhine Canyon with the Pacific Bay Police Department.

Padmasana said that he could not remember his past life in Pacific Bay in detail. He only remembered that he was stoned frequently and hung out with outlaws in the desert. One day however, he saw a bright flashing light, which made him think of changing his life and go to India in search for peace.

Jonah and the player went to the museum after the guru requested them to do so that they could clear their spiritual karma. There, they found a golden charm with a mysterious symbol, which Armand Dupont said stood for forgiveness. Since they could not go arrest the guru for peddling old mythology, Jonah asked to give the amulet of forgiveness to Marina Romanova.

Jonah explained that he intentionally missed while aiming to shoot her way back when she was a student in Moscow because he fell in love with her at first sight. Marina barely accepted Jonah's apologies but told him that it would take more than the amulet to earn her friendship. Marina also told the player to scram as she was not going to kiss Jonah anyway.

Ingrid sent the player to Bangalore as the city was struggling with a newly unleashed deadly epidemic and requested help from Lars, and Angela Douglas.

Trivia

  • This case and The Parting Shot are the only two cases of World Edition in which the victim and the killer are relatives.
  • While one task in A New Light required a star to talk to Marina Romanova, she was not accused of any wrongdoing during the murder investigation, and her showing up on the suspect list during A New Light should be considered incidental.
