Queen of Hearts is a case featured in Criminal Case as the thirteenth case of City of Romance (Season 8) and the three-hundred sixty-fifth case overall. It is the final one to take place in the Obsession district of Paris.

Plot

Carrie and the player went to Rock en Vincennes to monitor a Luvver meet-and-greet, only to find photographer and event winner Lola du Maurier shot with an arrow through the mouth.

During the investigation, the team flagged the player's old colleague, David Jones, as a suspect. Soon after, Jones told the team that he saw some of Lola's belongings near the main stage, prompting the team to head there for clues. Later, musician Kimmie D had to calm her fans down, who threatened to stampede the concert grounds due to the cancellation of her concert. The team then found enough evidence to arrest Luvver sociologist Mélodie Laurence for the murder.

During her confession, Mélodie admitted that due to her bitterness over her failed love life, she designed the Luvver algorithm to match up conventionally attractive people with those who were completely incompatible with them. However, Lola took a peek on her laptop and threatened to uncover the truth during the event. Not wanting to be exposed, Mélodie shot her with a bow and arrow. Judge Lebrun sentenced Mélodie to 23 years imprisonment with mandatory psychiatric evaluation.

Post-trial, Hugo and the player failed to persuade CEO Samy Malouf to remove the hearts feature from the app, telling them to get more proof of it being addictive. The team then found Lola's diary, which (per Émile) recounted Lola's manic episodes during her quest for hearts. Per the diary, Lola's friend Zaza Printemps witnessed all her episodes. The team then took Zaza with them to meet again with Malouf, who was successfully convinced due to Zaza's anecdotes. He then told the team he would convene with his lawyers for their final decision. The team then restored Lola's bejeweled comb to give to Zaza as a memento.

Meanwhile, Jones told Enzo and the player that while he was having a beer with Carrie, she left and never came back. After Enzo failed to reach her by phone, they found Carrie at the festival, sick and holding on to blue pills. Per Nadia, the pills were a methamphetamine drug called Zarbi that reacted lethally with alcohol, explaining Carrie's sickness. After Carrie recovered (thanks to Enzo's care), she recalled that she had a headache and took the pills as a man had told her it was aspirin.

After all the events, the team decided to celebrate as Malouf had been successfully convinced and that he had taken the hearts feature off the app.

Trivia

  • Some references can be seen in the "Enchanted Forest" crime scene:
  • Other references to The Conspiracy are mentioned in Chapter 1:
    • Jones says "I'll bet Paris doesn't have problems with demon fish or crazy corn", which are references to Maple Heights and Spring Fields' plots, respectively.
    • The now defunct organization known as Ad Astra is also mentioned.
  • In Chapter 3, there is a noticeable error in the steps, naming Mélodie Laurence as Mélodie Laurent. This is most likely a developer's oversight.
