Maximillian "Max" Poe was the victim in Shear Murder (Case #5 of Mysteries of the Past).

Profile

Maximillian was a businessman who was notable for having lost his wife Valeria six months prior to his murder and being a pillar of the Irish community. He had short brown hair, blue eyes, and a mustache, and donned a white-collared shirt with a dark cyan vest and a black bow tie at the time of his death.

Murder details

Maximillian was found at a greenhouse on his residence with garden shears stabbed in his chest. Having seen the shears in the victim, Isaac and the player filed the shears as the murder weapon. According to Dick, the killer had also left traces of naphthalene on the shears, an organic compound which is mostly found in mothballs. This meant Maximillian's killer used mothballs.

Relationship with suspects

Maximillian was the widower of Valeria Poe. His brother-in-law, Vincent Lorenzo, blamed him for Valeria's death, while Maximillian blamed her death on Dr Ezekiel Jones.

After Valeria's death, Maximillian became romantically-interested in his kitchen-maid, Audrey Scott, who felt uncomfortable about his feelings toward her. He was also involved in an incident with his friend, Sheila Black, who fell on him after she attempted to politely kiss him.

Maximillian was also a follower at Father Donovan's church. However, he heard rumors about Donovan's criminal past and confronted him about it.

Killer and motives

The killer turned out to be Sheila.

Sheila admitted to the murder, saying that she had loved Maximillian for many years. After his wife died, she tried to get his love, but he refused her advances. She was pushed to her limit when she found out he was starting to like his cook, Audrey Scott. Thinking that nobody but her could have Maximillian, she stabbed him with the shears and stole his ring to make it look like a robbery. Judge Takakura sentenced her to life in prison.
